I do this exercise in my retail workshops
where I get the participants to imagine
they are in a department store.

There is a phone ringing in the back ground
some quiet “muzak” playing
and they have found an item they want to
purchase.

They look around for a staff member to help
them but no one comes to help them and they
can’t see any staff in the department where
they are.

They continue to look around for someone to
assist them in making a purchase but still
no one shows up.

Then I ask them to tell me what department
store they are in.

Now if you’ve had a look at the top of this post
you’ll see a photo which will tell you the
name of the department store that 9 out of
10 people will say when I do this exercise.

Now let me explain the photo…

I had the exact experience that I describe in the
exercise again just recently but…

I actually answered the phone ! yep I answered it
and my mate Nat who I was with was so spun out
he took a photo

So what happened when I answered the phone?

Well it was a guy who wanted top know if they
had any IPOD touches. I spoke to the guy (who
understandably sounded a bit agro) given
he’d been waiting so long for someone to answer
the phone.

I told him that they had them and to come down
I also took his number down and said I would get
someone to call him back.

Then I got into trouble

One of that staff came back and saw me talking on
the phone.

It was like I had been caught doing something
wrong in the school playground he said
“what are you doing? you aren’t allowed
behind here”

I said “mate, the phone was ringing and no
one answered it for like 10 minutes it’s a guy
who wants to buy an IPOD touch”

Totally ignoring me he said he was going to call
security.

I said “mate, I was doing you a favour it’s a sale, call him back and arrange
a time for him to come down and buy that IPOD it’s
a sure thing”

In the end – he didn’t call security and we walked out.

But it got me thinking…

With business so tough why are people not
