If I hadn’t actually met the
guy that did this, I seriously
wouldn’t have believed it

And as you read this, please
understand that I mean no
prejudice and make no judgements
in terms of the subject matter

About 4 years ago we did some
work with a national broadband
company who at that time were
using a tele-marketing team
to do their lead generation.

we were helping them develop
more powerful scripting to
create better conversion to
appointments.

We were in the middle of
a training session with them
and this guy told a story
which to this day still
blows me away when I think
of it

This guy was working through the
yellow pages calling people
to suggest alternative
telephone carriers

he was in a room full of other telemarketers
doing exactly the same thing.

Then he had a crazy idea

He began calling every hairdresser
in the yellow pages pretending
he was a gay, German ex hairdresser
called “Stavros”

He used an effeminate German accent
as he started speaking to the
owners of these business’s
many of who were either females and
homosexual males

But here is where it gets
interesting

Suddenly his results went through
the roof !

The hairdressers he was contacting
began coming on board in
their droves

his results were 20X the rest of the
team and no one could event get
close to his results

And not only was he getting amazing
results he and the clients were having an absolute ball
in the process and had the rest of
his team rolling with laughter as they
listened to him

So Why did this happen?

Well the main reason is because of
the instant rapport he created
by ringing a constituency that
not only accept but embrace the
idea of speaking to “one of their
own”

Plus it’s at the very core of gaining
rapport – the idea that “this person
is like me”

And when you can not only engineer
that process but also stand out from
your competition by what you actually
say the results can be simply stunning.

So my action step for you is asking
the question, how can we resonate and
be more relevant with our clients?

And in as much as this is an entertaining
story, I am not suggesting you go to
these exact lengths, but there are
ways of showing up as more relevant
so you have a better affinity with
your potential and existing clients
